Tips For Maintaining A Healthy Smile

May 3 • 2 minute read

Most people are taught the importance of caring for their teeth from childhood. People often take their dental health for granted until problems arise. Reminders of dental maintenance can keep people on the path to strong teeth, healthy gums, and a beautiful smile.

Follow a routine: Brush, floss and see your dentist

Good habits lead to a healthy lifestyle. Brush teeth twice a day for two minutes as part of a wise regiment. This routine should be done in the morning and again at night before falling asleep. Dentists recommend a brush with soft bristles. Soft bristles can reach the nooks and crannies surrounding teeth without damaging enamel or scraping gums. Angle the toothbrush at 45 degrees and use short, gentle strokes. Brush along the gum line, and do not forget to replace your toothbrush every two to three months.

Flossing is equally vital to maintaining a healthy smile. Floss between each tooth and use 18 to 22 inches of floss, making sure not to reuse contaminated sections of the string. The most dangerous bacteria reside in the crevices between the tooth and the gums. Removing the bacteria prevents plaque from forming on your teeth. Also, use a tongue scraper to remove harmful germs. Follow this up with an antiseptic mouthwash.

It is essential to include a twice-yearly visit to the dentist as part of your dental routine. Even the most disciplined people need to see a dentist on a regular basis. So long as we are eating food, we are breeding harmful bacteria that can create plaque and tartar. Only a professional can remove buildup on our teeth and prevent more serious complications to our oral and overall health.

Diet and lifestyle effects on dental well-being

A diet high in sugar and simple carbohydrates creates an environment where bacteria grows and thrives. Bacteria causes inflammation and tooth decay. For gums and overall health, complex carbohydrates and food rich in fiber are best. Fibrous foods like celery and apples can also cleanse the mouth when you are not able to brush. Surprisingly, cheese removes acid in the mouth which slows bacterial growth. Rinsing the mouth with water or choosing an ADA approved sugarless gum can also remove food particles from teeth.

Smoking greatly impacts oral health. Oxygen in the bloodstream is what the body uses to fight infection, so when oxygen is reduced because of the use of tobacco products, germs grow undeterred. Smokers are 50% more likely to develop gum disease than non-smokers.

An ounce of prevention will spare you a pound of dental problems

A beautiful smile begins with discipline. Many dental issues can be avoided by simply following a routine of brushing, flossing and visiting the dentist every six months. Eating healthy foods and refraining from tobacco can also promote a bright smile. You will never regret taking care of your smile.
